How to Join WLC and the New Member Checklist
1.Read over the WAPF brochure or our food philosophy handout or a similar approach to food (Slow Food, Paleo, Locavore, etc.
. You must be in general agreement in order to move forward. Aka, our members are people who want access to properly raised, local, real foods, and who want to support small local farms and businesses, not pre-packaged, processed food stuffs.
2.Read over the co-op member's agreement form. Sign and get a signed copy to us or sign the master list at our place. You may also email us that you agree so that we can unlock your website account after we have spoken with you on the phone. Please register for an account in the upper right hand corner of the site and make sure you select to get the newsletters!
3.Meet with us one time individually so that…
a. We know who you are (if we don't yet)
b. We get verbal confirmation that you understand what the
group is about (that you are not in the group just to get
one or two things on the cheap)
c. We can give you an intro to ordering (the best way to learn
to order is from a family already in the group)
Step three can be done at a co-op pickup time (you don't have to schedule a special time to get together). Step three is not mandatory if we have met and talked with you before.
4. Set up your co-op account (between $50-$1500) from which your weekly purchases can be debited. Your account should reflect between one and six months' worth of buying. Also note, we exist to help all kinds of people, not just those with bucket loads of cash upfront. Thus, do not be discouraged if you cannot put much money in your account or buy much at the start. What matters to us is the direction, desire, and determination families and individuals have to make changes.* We work very hard to teach people how to live on less by buying better quality products or making their own food and items so that they will have enough money to purchase rightly raised and prepared food.
5. You are now a member of the co-op! Buy whatever you desire from our numerous farmers and companies knowing that your buying, if done responsibly, contributes to rather than detracts from the preservation and good of people, communities, land, animals, and our finite planetary resources.
*Why the prepay accounts? Three reasons.
First, prepaying clearly makes us a buying club rather than a business, thus savings us thousands per year in various expenses that would otherwise be passed on to our members.
Two, it gives the group the necessary cash flow to cover all the orders each month (we have had $10,000 months of late).
Three, it helps people transition more quickly. Since their money is in the buying club, they are more likely to purchase through the buying club rather than getting junk at other places. It moves money away from unsustainable and unjust economies into local, sustainable, and hopefully ecologically friendly groups and economies.
